I am confused re the need for an artist statement for each entry. Can it be the same general artist statement for all 3 entries or do I need to write a separate one that addresses each entry? I am also confused re the requirement that the materials and techniques be listed in 50 CHARACTERS or less. This means letters to me. This does not seem possible and I wonder if you meants 50 WORDS instead? Perhaps this is a typo and you meant 500 characters? Could you please clarify this as soon as possible. Thanks.

Hello,
There is an inconsistency with regard to file size on the JAS website. When initially uploading files, it states that all images must be 1400 pixel min dimension and 2000 pixel max widest dimension. I sized my images to fit this parameter and proceeded to upload them. When I went to apply for the Metal Inclinations show, they say that images cannot exceed 1400 PPI in any dimension. They reserve the right to disqualify any entry that does not meet these standards. Do I have to go back and resize everything again? Please advise! Thanks!!

I noticed the Metal Inclination rules state all images submitted must have the year completed entered in the appropriate text box when uploading images. Anyone have any idea where that text box might be? Or if that is a new feature and I will need to re-upload my images to fill that in?
Also, do they take your website address from the contact information for JAS or does that have to be added to the application separately? If so, where? Thanks!

I have heard that there will an extended deadline date for applications. Is this true? Why do we have to hurry to make the June 30 date, if it's going to be extended. I'm not quite finished with my pieces and would love the extra time.

I am an artist and I would like to present three pieces for metal inclinations that are made basically by casting. Do you consider this silversmithing technique?

My favorite image that I would like to submit for the Metal Inclinations exhibition is already sold. May I submit this image, or does it have to be a piece that will be available for sale during the competition? i.e. Will I have to pull the items I submit from my shows this summer?
All three images I will be submitting are from the same line, which has its own artist statement. Should I customize the artist statement attached to each individual image to cover only the specific techniques that are evident in that particular piece, or is it acceptable to use the more general statement for each entry? For example, Some of my pieces use embossed leather, some use copper etching plates, and some use a combination of both materials. Should I remove references to the embossed leather in the artists statement accompanying the piece with just etched copper? Thank you.

I had some problems sizing my images for the metal Inclinations exhibition application. When I set the resolution to 300 my pixels are not exactly 2000 or 1400 pixels. What am I supposed to do?

The info sheet says "$40 for up to three images." If I am only entering one object, can I send three different images of that one object?

In the "Images from past Exhibitions" link in the left column of this site, you can see catalog images of the last three exhibitions the Society has sponsored. In 2001 we sponsored "Metal Departures"; in 2004, "Stones"; in 2006 "Hey...These Things Just Snap Right Off". In 1999 SMM sponsored "Talismans for the Coming Millenium" and "At the Table" in 1996. All of oSMM's exhibitions have met with excellent reviews and great media coverage.

Using the theme of the exhibition as a guide, what are your inclinations? Inclinations= (Aptitude, tendency, disposition, prejudice, direction, leaning, incline, preference) Where do you see your work going? What are you inclined to create? It is a fairly broad theme, it should encourage creative license an elicit a variety of work. ALL pieces should incorporate metal and use metalsmithing, silversmithing or goldsmithing techniques.
As far as the digital images are concerned; follow the size and resolution guidelines on the Juried art Services website. Make sure you have sharp and well composed images, that will show your creations at their best..

Objects that are not predominately made of metal.
For example: A fiber, plastic, glass or ceramic bead necklace with a silver closure, would NOT be considered predominately metal. A carved wooden bowl with a copper rim, would NOT be considered metal. But a beaded necklace of the artist's own hand made metal beads or a metal hollowware bowl with a wooden handle WOULD be considered predominately metal. Hope this helps clear up any questions.

Dear Society for Midwest Metalsmiths,
I am writing to you to ask if your The 2008 METAL Inclinations International Digital Exhibition contest is also open to sculptures; as I have reviewed your members work and see that most everything is in a jewerly presentation. My art creations are based on metal sculpting. Advise me whether I would be qualified within your contest judging. Thank you for your time and consideration,
